An unusually nice Obol from Athens
Lot 387
ATTICA. Athens. Circa 454-404 BC. Obol (Silver, 9 mm, 0.69 g, 11 h). Head of Athena to right, wrearing crested Attic helmet decorated with three olive leaves and palmette. Rev. ΑΘE Owl standing right, head facing; to left, olive leaf and fruit; all within incuse square. Kroll 13. SNG Copenhagen 53-56. A charming example in unusually nice condition. Well struck and attractively toned. Very minor porosity, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.

From a German collection, assembled since the 1960s.

The small silver from Athens was used for daily business and transactions and is therefore often very worn. Attractive examples, like this Obol, are actually quite rare!
